Issue 5 - May 2009
XML is increasingly being used in all kinds of publishing. For dynamic publishing, XML is a critical enabling technology. In this edition of The Dynamic Publisher, we look at how XML (extensible markup language) facilitates dynamic publishing and offers a host of benefits. Through its hierarchy and tags, XML can represent not only the structure of a piece of content, but also what the meaning of each piece is. Moreover, it can guide how those pieces can be properly fit together to form different kinds of documents or variations on the same document. Working in this way, the use of XML increases content accuracy, facilitates the creation of customised and multi-channel content, and speeds up the publishing process.
To make XML real, we consider it in two very different dynamic publishing scenarios: Marketing and Government.
In the first installment of a two-part series, Ann Rockley of The Rockley Group explores the value of using XML in the creation of marketing materials for multiple channels, including the development of product materials and targeted e-mail campaigns.
We then turn to the Irish Government and its ground-breaking eCabinet initiative to see how they use a dynamic publishing solution based on XML to engage thousands of civil servants across the government, bringing an unprecedented level of efficiency to the decision making process.
In the next issue we’ll continue our two-part series on XML in marketing, and we’ll also take a closer look at cross-media publishing.
Sincerely,
PG Bartlett, Editor The Dynamic Publisher
