Publication Standards Part 1: The Fragmented Present

This is a great blog post by Nick Disabato on the need for standards and semantic markup, new roles and responsibilities, and big changes in the publishing industry. It’s a great roundup of some of the many issues facing publishing (people, processes, change and technology).

The web was founded without an intent to disrupt any particular industry; it had no precedent, no analogy. E-reading antagonizes a large, powerful industry that’s scared of what this new way of reading brings—and they’re either actively fighting open standards or simply ignoring them.”
